Watercolor
Instructor: Allis Teegarden
These are on-going classes:
Thursdays, 10:00-12:30, or
Fridays, 10:00-12:30
$80.00/ 4 consecutive classes
Share the enjoyment of exploring the luminous medium of watercolor.
Allis folds drawing instruction into her classes so that students
can paint what they see in life, in still lifes, and in photographs
and in their imaginations. Students gain a knowledge of color theory,
color mixing, design and composition as they progress in the class.
They will learn to evaluate the paints, papers, and brushes that
are available, and how to choose the right ones for the effects
that they desire. Allis gives one-on-one lessons in the context
of the class, so that every student gets exactly what they need
in order to progress on their work. Students interested in incorporating
other painting/drawing/collage media with watercolor can also experiment
in this class.
Allis has been teaching watercolor and related art classes for over
20 years. She has taught regularly at Riley Street for over 14 years,
and some of her students have been with her for that long! However,
most of her students are newer to watercolor, and she is able to
help the brand new painters get started immediately. Students truly
learn mastery of watercolor techniques, which are challenging and
beautiful.

Encaustic Painting
Instructor: Catherine McCauley
Sat., 7/31/10 or Sat.. 9./11
10:00-2:00
$70.00 plus $25.00 materials fee (total $95.00)
Encaustic is a painting medium in which dry oil pigment is suspended
in a binder of beeswax and damar resin crystals. It dates back to
ancient Egypt and Greece; it is the oldest pigment binder. It can
produce paintings of shimmering luminosity and brilliance. It weathers
well: it is unaffected by moisture and can withstand higher temperatures
than oil paintings. Much of the oldest surviving art was created
with encaustics. Encaustic literally means "to fuse."
In this class, students will learn to take a painting method that
is centuries old and use it in a contemporary fashion. Various techniques
will be incorporated, including collage, layering, fusing, scraping,
embedding, incising and adding pigments to the wax. Safety precautions
and the history of encaustics will also be discussed.

Encaustic Painting Demo
Presented by Mary Black using R&F Encaustics
Saturday, 8/28/10
10:00-noon
FREE! But space is limited, so reservations
are a must!
Once considered obsolete, encaustic is a process whereby wax-based
paint is kept molten on a heated palette. It is then applied to
a surface which is reheated so that the paint fuses to the substrate,
either into a uniform enamel-like surface or a surface that is thick
and textured. During this demonstration, sponsored by R&F Handmade
Paints, participants will be given an understanding of the encaustic
medium and method, basic core information, including history, health
and safety, use of supports and materials and the fundamental techniques
of painting and fusing. Participants will have an opportunity to
experiment with this fascinating medium. If you have ever wanted
to try this mysterious, beautiful, and extremely durable medium,
you will enjoy this demonstration.
Mary Black is an award winning encaustic painter who has exhibited
nationally. You will definitely be inspired when you view her work

10:00-4:00
$80.00 plus $50 materials fee ($130.00 total)

pendants, beads, and earrings, from design to finishing and coloring
techniques. A tool kit will be provided for use during the workshop
and may be purchased at the end of the class.
