09_michaelhardingMichael Harding Oil Colors

Presenter: Bradford Brenner

Michael Harding Oils are all made by hand, using techniques which date back to the days of the Old Masters. There is a very simple reason for this painstaking process. As an artist and painter Michael wanted to create colours that were true and vibrant, and paint which was beautiful and durable. The greater the pigment content of a paint the greater the resistance it has to fading. Nearly all manufacturers use various fillers to extend the volume of the oil paint. It may increase profits but it compromises on quality. Come and give these wonderful paints a try! We know you will be blown away.

The choice of pigments is a unique mix of the best traditional colors and the best pigments derived from the latest technological developments.

maxresdefaultR&F Encaustics

Presenter: TBA

What began as a painter’s solo endeavor has evolved into a multi-faceted paint company that is material-focused and artist-driven. During the first year Richard produced encaustic paint as R&F Encaustics. While he struggled to start-up the business, asking pigment suppliers for double samples and also working a second job, the seed was firmly planted. Twenty five years later, R&F is the leading brand of encaustic paints on the market, and there is a good reason why. Their durability, color intensity, and color variety makes them loved by encaustic artists. We invite you to stop by and try them!

Early morning Elliott BayM. Graham Gouache

Presenter: Ron Stocke

M. Graham was founded 22 years ago by a couple of artists who shared a passion for quality artist supplies. Since then, the M. Graham family has remained dedicated to providing the finest color available by milling our paint in small batches. As an essential ingredient in their gouache binding medium, honey contributes to moistness for smooth, easily controlled applications, increased pigment concentrations and freedom from reliance on preservatives. Because of the honey medium, our color resists hardening on the palette, or in the tube. It dilutes easily, often after months of disuse. Ron Stocke has worked closely with M.Graham over the years and he will be here demonstrating this fantastic paint to attendees! Ron Stocke is a nationally celebrated watercolor artist, though you might know him better by the cover art that he produces for the M.Gram watercolor sets that we carry in our stores. We are thrilled to have him on board and we sincerely hope that you will enjoy his charming personality and exquisite artwork as much as we do!

MTN Sprays

Presenter: Jared Powell

Founded 1994 by a group of paints industry innovators from Barcelona Spain, began the path to create a company by doing what their successors at Montana Colors S.L. still do, listen to their customers. The feedback they received was that brand after brand of aerosol paints lacked consistency, color range, and difficultly in its control. Their answer was to create a product specific with these key issues in mind. With these thoughts in mind, MTN Colors has created a line of spray colors that has taken over the Street Art Industry. Their colors are adored by our customers and sought after by those customers looking for specific laydowns, pressures and effects that they seem not to be able to achieve with other sprays. Local art celebrity Jared Powell will be here to demonstrate just why he loves these paints, and why they are the preferred paints among spray artists. .

Only Stillman & Birn offers a sketchbook system that gives artists the choice of paper weight, shade, and surface type best suited to their specific techniques. Presenter: Andrew Cook

The history of the graphite pencils which are made today in the factory in Hirm stretches back as far as 1790, the year in which the successful architect and entrepreneur Joseph Hardtmuth invented the very first graphite pencil in Vienna. Many companies have taken on the task of perfecting the graphite pencil, and though many excellent products have been made since 1790, but Creatacolor has truly reigned among the top of their market with superior products for a multitude of drawing needs.

Well known for their superior quality, these traditional graphite pencils are made by mixing and then grinding together different types of graphite with high-grade fireproof ceramic clay. This special clay gives the graphite high breaking strength. The proportion of graphite to clay determines the softness and darkness of the lead. Hardness/softness grades from 9B (softest) to H cover the full range of applications. Softer grades produce broader and darker strokes. Harder grades produce more precise and lighter strokes.

4c12f80466613a0c493199f43908c412William Mitchell Calligraphy

Presenter: Richard Snowden

With the steady incline in the popularity of creative lettering and calligraphy, we have decided to introduce a variety of sets and nibs from William Mitchell. The William Mitchell heritage in making pen nibs began whilst working with his brother John Mitchell in the early 1820s. William Mitchell established his own business in 1825 to become one of the leading nib manufacturers and famous for lettering pens. Almost 100 years later William Mitchell merged with Hinks, Wells & Co another pen manufacturer to form British Pens employing around 1000 people in the Bearwood Road area of Birmingham. During the early 1960s British Pens acquired the pen business of other pen manufacturers Perry & Co and John Mitchell once again reuniting the two brothers. Joseph Gillott who were famous for their artist drawing and mapping nibs amalgamated with British pens in 1969.

Not surprisingly, they are still going strong today and we are ecstatic to have Richard Snowden here representing this line and showing how amazing these simple tools are for creating elegant calligraphic script, or for aiding in the more modern creative lettering.

Fabriano Papersmill

Presenter: Andrew Cook

Very few companies can claim a longer or more distinguished heritage than Fabriano. Dating back to 1264, the Fabriano mill’s fine arts papers were used and highly praised by Michelangelo. Fabrianese paper masters pioneered many of the processes now common in paper manufacture today, including the watermark and the technique of surface sheet gluing using gelatine.

In 2002, Fabriano became part of the Fedrigoni Group, which backed it with significant new investments. The company is committed to renewable energy and makes extensive use of self-generated hydroelectric power. The production yield from the six continuous machines, one of which is dedicated entirely to producing bank notes and security papers, makes the company unique in the European paper industry and one of the leading players in its field worldwide.

That being said, we are extraordinarily proud to carry this brand and many of the beautiful lines that they manufacture and distribute. Andrew Cook will be more than happy to introduce passers-by to a new world of substrates and toned papers that are good from everything from dry media, mixed media to watercolor.

Until the end of the 17th century, each artist had to make their own painting tools. The desire to continue the creative process with the least possible interruption made it essential for artists to also be excellent brush makers. The better the brush maker, the better the artist could evenly distribute colours.

During the 18th century, an ambitious crafts guild started to master the art of brush binding, relieving the artist of this burden. As this guild increased their expertise through experience and experimentation, the young trade was soon booming in the commercial town of Nuremberg. The city soon gained a worldwide reputation for brush making. Self-conscious brush-makers went to work in a frock coat and bowler hat until the beginning of the 19th century, to visibly reinforce their respected position.

The same pride in the work has been continued on throughout the years with DaVinci Brush. They remain one of the most requested brush brands in our store, and with good reason.

Mr. Sketch scented markers were introduced by Sanford in 1965 and have since been popular with children and adults alike. The markers them selves have been through some changes in scent, color and variety in the sets that are offered, but all in all, they are the same fun and smelly product that many of us have grown up with and are so very fond of.  In more recent times, Mr. Sketch has introduced an array of products which includes scented twistable crayons, pencils and fine tipped pens that all share the same fun scents as their larger counterparts.  Stop by and get in on the fun at Sanford's table!

Grumbacher Pre-Test Oil paints have been on of our mainstays as a professional, yet economical option.   The name "Pre-Test"  itself means that it has been tested by human hands before it ever reaches the retail shelf.  Each color swatch has been tested for masstone and mixability, and has been painted by hand in the USA.  It is further tested by our staff for characteristics such as lightfastness, drying properties, pigment dispersion and viscosity. Draw downs are compared and formulas are altered to ensure that our customers receive the best oil color at the best price. Truly a professional paint, the majority of our colors are single pigment, and have a lightfast rating of 1-excellent. Pre-tested Professional offers artists a modern palette with superior tinting strength.

4754685Arches Paper

Presenter: Craig Schottenstein

Paper pulp, that skillful blend of carefully selected fibers, is the quintessence of Arches papers and has been the guarantee of their quality for more than 500 years. The natural cotton fibers used for most of its production give Arches paper elegance and strength, with the subtleties of the grain giving the paper both touch and bulk. The traditional cylinder mould, an industrial papermaking process in use for more than a century, gave rise to the roll of paper. At the end of each production cycle, the cutting, plus the tactile and visual inspection of each sheet of Arches paper is entrusted to the hands and eyes of highly experienced women and men. Each production run is subjected to numerous technical controls, some of them very old and others more recent, which guarantee the undisputed quality of the papers that have given Arches its reputation. As a result, Arches continues to produce a paper with outstanding physical and chemical properties and an inimitable natural look and we continue to support this wonderful line of paper that is consistent in its quality and artist approval.

Here at Rileystreet, we have always taken great pride in providing the best customer service for our communities’ creative needs. However, 2017 proved to be a year that fortified that mission.

With the events of early October that took so much from many of the people that we’ve gotten to know over the years, we saw our community come together in ways that made each of us proud to be a part of something much larger. Support has come in many forms; but what we have taken from this tragedy is that we are surrounded by amazing people who come together in the face of adversity and hardship. We are honored to have been a part of the healing process for some, and we sincerely commit ourselves to continuing to do our small part within our community.

In celebrating our 50th anniversary, we as the Rileystreet family want to take a moment to acknowledge that we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for our loyal patrons and extended creative family.  We want to thank you all for the many years of inspired fun, and we look forward to adding a bit more color to Sonoma County and continuing to assist in the painting a place that we can all be proud to call home.
